The LKT Mental Health and Addictions understands the importance of culture and tradition as part of the healing process. It is our goal to offer programming that is culturally sensitive and steeped in the traditions of Kwakwaka’wakw People.
It is also our practice to offer ceremony and tradition as a part of every program.
The LKT Mental Health and Wellness Program offers a variety of services designed to promote healing across an array of social and personal issues. This broad range of client-centered counseling services can be accessed by referral at any of the LKT sites. Counseling services also include group, family and marital counseling options. Access to alcohol and drug treatment and/or detox is also available.
The LKT Mental Health and Addictions Program also provides primary prevention services. The focus of these prevention services vary from site to site due to diverse community needs.
Some primary prevention focuses include:
The Community Wellness Worker identifies mental health and wellness needs in the community and recommends preventative program development to meet the needs. Providing supportive individual and group sessions based on evidence and better practice in Mental Health and Wellness. Collaboratively delivering care within the context of the community site team to ensure continuity of care across the continuum including the Island Health Authority (IHA) Mental Health and other community resources.
The New Beginnings program is based on supporting of women/men needing guidance. Support mentors are well connected to the communities and will provide support, practical assistance, and advocacy for women/men who are making fundamental changes in their lives. THe Community Support Mentor believes in the women/men and provides unconditional support as required and or directs them to the appropriate services be it internal or external.
It is the goal of LKT Health staff to work with the woman/men and their families to ensure success with the wrap around programs that exist. The program provides support to families currently struggling with direction for their future, or with high-risk life histories in the family of origin.
Goals include:
A major component of the Trauma Healing program is to develop a land based healing program to support individuals and families that need guidance and a platform to help with the success of individuals healing path. The intent of this program is to have the framework of Kwakwaka’wakw traditions and culture to help individuals explore guidance from our elders, different therapies, traditional foods, songs, dance and ceremonies to help in the process of reconnection, understanding, and self reflection, allowing individuals to gain the tools to help initiate the healing process.
To understand and meet the needs within the Kwakwaka’wakw families as a whole the Trauma Healing Program meets with communities and community supports on an ongoing basis to best support individuals and families and to create programs to support those needs.
A mobile outreach operated by LKT Health has taken to the streets to provide a holistic approach to health. The MOUHSS runs three days per week Tuesday (Spirit Square 8am-10.45am & Willow Point 11am-12pm), Wednesdays (Spirit Square 8:30am-10:45am & Curling Rink 11am-12pm) and Fridays (Nunns Creek 8am-12pm). The services provided are free, and the goal is to give holistic health services to those in need. LKT Health is the lead agency on the project, but it coordinates with other agencies to achieve that goal.
Services on the unit include counselling to social work to more concrete medical needs like wound care and testing services.
Collaboration and service coordination is essential when providing access to health care services for our most vulnerable populations; including but not limited to; folks living outside or are barely housed, people with mental health struggles or trauma. Through the creation of the MOUHSS, service providers can offer direct services to those who, for a variety of reasons, are unable to access health and support services. The MOUHSS engages people where they are, through a supportive environment that assists in achieving their wellness goals whilst reducing further harm and disconnection from the community.
